La Veta Pass One of three Hill turns on this day grinds up the last of the 2.5% grade on top of the great loop at Fir. The small train is heavy with agricultural products for Coors Brewing. The San Luis Valley still offers many shipping possibilities for the SLRG. If some track work was done the line could be used to transport King Mine Coal directly to Cement Plants in Pueblo, instead a 500 mile out of the way trip around the south-west. The valley would also be a closer place to unload fracking sand for the Farmington and Durango fields than the BNSF trans-con. Lets hope the new-operator also goes after old customers that were lost to trucks, due to other priorities from prior ownership.
A compilation of DRGW's La Veta Pass route to the San Luis Valley now operated by the SLRG.
With Rio Grande Scenic passenger operations coming to a close in 2019, the Alamosa sub is once again freight-only, as reflected here.
