After departing Syracuse, NY the New York Susquehanna & Western's mainline quickly changes scenery as it winds its way through the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. One such location where the change is the most apparent is here in LaFayette, NY where the line hugs the side of a steep hill. A small village named "Onativia" was once in this area, having a station on the line just north of this frame. However, now all that remains is a church and a few houses, as the village of Onatavia no longer officially exists. Standing on the side of the namesake Onatavia Rd, the sound of the five pack of EMD locomotives can be heard long before they emerge from the trees. Here we see NYSW train CL-1 (Cortland - Solvay turn) battling the grade with NYSW SD40-2 number 3018 in charge of the lengthy train.
