Remarks & Notes
Great Northern SD9 576 at Minneapolis Junction August 1968. Built in February 1954 and became BN 6103 and BNSF 6103, finally retired in 2012. The 576 received Big Sky Blue in October 1967 and still looks good here just shy of a year later. The Great Northern "Big Sky Blue" image change was a drastic left turn from the coveted Omaha Orange and Pullman Green but it did exactly what it was intended to do...make people take a second look at the Great Northern. There are MANY folks who hated BSB but there seems to be quite a few that like it as well. I personally think that Lippincott and Margulies hit it out of the park with Big Sky Blue. I wish it would have lasted longer and would have held up better in the elements. Karl Henkels Photo from my collection.
