Remarks & Notes
Chatsworth Rocks, in Santa Susana Pass in the northwest corner of Los Angeles, was the location of countless early Western films, from silent movies up to Roy Rogers’ television show. It has also been the location of Southern Pacific Railroad publicity photos since the days of the first streamlined Coast Daylights, with many photos of red and orange GS-2, GS-3 and GS-4 4-8-4 steam locomotives pulling matching passenger cars. The Daylights are gone, and the Southern Pacific is gone, but Chatsworth Rocks is still a spectacular photo location. In May 2020 a Union Pacific engineering special passes through on its way from Las Vegas, Nevada, to San Luis Obispo, on California’s Central Coast. UP’s SD70ACe 1111, a locomotive decorated to honor the railroad’s many hard-working employees, is powering this nine-car passenger train. (Los Angeles – May 15, 2020)
