Favorite Locomotives: The original GP59s are one of my favorite locomotives on the NS all-time roster. While some have been rebuilt/repurposed, none remain on the active roster in their original form. NS 4616, seen here, was sold in late April/early May of 2020 to Progress Rail (PRLX). Only 36 GP59s were made by EMD and Norfolk Southern purchased all of them. The second unit, NS 5614 (GP38-2), was rebuilt from ex-Southern GP38 SOU 2745 (later NS 2745) and at the time of this publication, is still on the active roster. In this photo, the crew of the NS H65 had just arrived from Allentown, PA to take charge of the power.
