Another railway line of Chile, which was partly destroyed by the heavy floods in august 2015, was the "Tocopilla" of the Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile from Tocopilla to Maria Elena (1067 mm gauge or 3 ft 6 in). The railway line was shut down in november 2015 and road traffic took over. In april 2012 the two General Electric "Boxcabs" 289A # 607 "Alejandra" and # 601 "Andrea" are nearing Barrilles with an empty sodium nitrate (NaNO3) train up from the harbour in Tocopilla. From here further to the mine near Maria Elena, diesel will take over the train. The SQM had 7 of this 60 ton boxcabs (# 601 to 607) for 1500 V DC, all built in 1927 by GE in Schenectady, New York.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
