Remarks & Notes
"Staten Island Railway at American Self Storage" A St. George Terminal bound Staten Island Railway train passes by the former Louis De Jonge Paper Works Company in the Rosebank neighborhood of Staten Island. The Louis De Jonge Paper Works Co was started in 1846 and produced a variety of coated, colored, printed and embossed papers, used for box coverings, label printing, containers and packaging for merchandise. They are well known for their famous “Tiffany blue” paper that was used for Tiffany’s shopping bags and tissue paper, used to wrap their gifts. The company built and moved into the building seen here in 1919. This allowed them to ship and receive product via the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (the original owners of the line) via a track that ran straight into the building. Unfortunately in 1975 the company filed for bankruptcy and many years later, the building was sold to American Self Storage who has since painted the whole building in red, white and blue.
