A Penn Central Boston-Washington train rolls through the big cut at Groton, CT, behind a pair of ex-PRR E8s, which by the summer of 1969 had taken over the ex-NH Shore Line from FL9s. This cut was the result of an early 20th century line relocation that replaced the original trackage along the Groton waterfront.
The three biggest passenger carriers - Pennsylvania, New York Central, and New Haven - merged to create the ill-fated Penn Central, whose passenger losses and poor service led to the formation of Amtrak and state-owned commuter lines.
