Remarks & Notes |
BIG BOY 4014 under Pikes Peak. Union Pacific's magnificent restoration starts up the 1.2% climb towards Cedar Point. The train is on the former transcontinental mainline of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. The CRI&P "Rock Island" which once had trackage rights over the Union Pacific between Limon and Denver once used helper locomotives to push or double-head trains up this grade in the days of steam. The Big Boy will need no such help on this November morning, the 4014 was designed to pull heavy trains up very similar grades on the Overland Route unassisted. |
