| In the south eastern corner of Wyoming is a abrupt escarpment of sandstone and rock that rises from the farmland along the Platte River to the high plains. The Union Pacific's Yoder subdivision climbs this escarpment on a 1.25% grade that includes a Tunnel and a series of sharp curves close to 10 degrees. The region highly resembles Burlington Northern's Crawford Hill before its rebuild. The Union Pacific built the Yoder Subdivision in the early 1900's to move agricultural products from fields near Scotts Bluff, NE and a large new sugar beat mill near Torrington. The line had a mostly lightly traveled history until the Powder River coal boom. In the height of PRB traffic the line was mostly used for empties returning to the coal fields. Occasionally a westbound coal train would battle the long 1.25% grade, sometimes with manned helpers. In the 2020's the line still sees some traffic like this heavy 130 car coal load screaming up Albin Hill, with two DPUs shoving on the rear..... |
