Western of Alabama's local train 6 waits at the crossing as an eastbound freight rolls by on Southern's former Central of Georgia Birmingham-Columbus, GA mainline. The crossing was not interlocked at the time, and all trains stopped short of the crossing and sent a crew member to ascertain that there were no opposing movements, then to drop a lighted fusee at the crossing. The train then proceeded, with the man on the ground swinging aboard as the slowly-moving train passed over the crossing. The man in the green jacket has just performed that function, while the man in the blue jacket made a brief visit to the agent's office for unknown reasons. Six-axle power did run on this line in the 1970s, but this quartet of geeps was more typical.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
