| Nevada Northern’s beautiful ten wheeler #40 along with it’s 2 car passenger train sits in the East Ely yard next to the freight house. #40 was built by Baldwin in 1912 and has been on the line ever since. When I was working on a drilling rig south of Ely in 1970, I vividly remember entering the still very active roundhouse and being given permission to walk around, unescorted, anywhere I wanted. I spent many minutes just sitting alone in the cab of #40 and trying to imagine what it would have been like to ride the train from Ely all the way north to Shafter and Cobre. |
