Remarks & Notes
A trio of Southern Railway E8As lead the railway’s flagship train, the Southern Crescent, as it makes its way from New Orleans LA to Washington DC. Train 2 is seen at the passenger station in Birmingham, Alabama, in October 1974. When Amtrak was formed in the early 1970s, a handful of railroad’s opted to operate their own passenger trains rather than join the new system: Denver & Rio Grande Western, Rock Island and Southern Railway. This is, however, an Amtrak car in Number 2’s consist, most likely a through sleeper.

The Southern Railway was one of three US railroads that decided not to join Amtrak in 1971. Its flagship train, the Southern Crescent, Washington - New Orleans, set the standard for passenger rail service in the US for most of the 1970s.
