Cutting through 738' of nearly impenetrable granite, Tunnel 35 is a classic railroad tunnel along the Donner Pass Route. Originally constructed by the Southern Pacific Railroad, Tunnel 35 was part of a major double tracking project in the 1920's. Nearly 100 years later, the tunnel is still in operation. On New Year's Day 2020, Union Pacific 1983 exits the iconic portal of Tunnel 35 as it leads a westbound Z train through Yuba Pass.
