The West Point Route (A&WP and WofA) between Atlanta and Montgomery was dominated by GP40s/40-2s for many years. Starting around 1967, WP/GA upgraded their fleet of early geeps with 40s/40-2s. When Family Lines initiated two pairs of run-through trains on the line in 1973, the L&N trains (213/214) often had GP40s, and the SCL trains (215/216) were powered by 3-4 GP40s/40-2s almost every day for the first few years. The merger with Chessie brought lots more 40s onto the line, as Chessie was a big, big user of GP40s. By the time of this photo, however, the EMD 3,000hp B-Bs were much less common on the 'big' trains, having been supplanted by newer C-Cs. FYI - leader 6350 is the former SCL 1640 (4/72) and trailing unit 6402 is former C&O 4264 (1/78).
