Stretching out as far as the eye can see (because, after all, the eye cannot see around the hill in the distance) is BNSF Railway train Z-ALTSBD9-26. On the second day of its journey from Alliance, Texas, to San Bernardino, California, this train is just 25½ miles (41.03827 km) from its destination. The quartet of General Electric BNSF diesels on the front of the train are ES44C4 8327, ES44DC 7555, ES44DC 6774 and Dash 9-44CW 5054. Visible 50’ (15.24 m) above the train is the Union Pacific’s Mojave Sub, constructed as the Southern Pacific’s “Palmdale Cutoff” to alleviate rail congestion on the SP in the Los Angeles Basin and opened in 1967.
