Departing south (railroad west) from Union Pacific's North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah, is UP local LUE46 10. On this afternoon (August 10, 2012), this train has no obvious ties to the Union Pacific, as both locomotives are leasers belonging to Helm Leasing. HLCX "GP38M-2" 1046 was built by EMD in January 1967 as Milwaukee Road GP40 164. The Milwaukee later renumbered it to MILW 2037, and when the bankrupt Milwaukee’s assets were sold off, this engine became Soo Line GP40 2027. SOO 2027 was eventually sold to the Union Pacific, becoming UP GP40 875. The UP later had it rebuilt, including an updated electrical system, and it was renumbered and had its model changed to UP GP38M-3 2546, later renumbered UP 1046. The engine was eventually sold to Helm, where it retains that road number. HLCX 1083 is also a GP38M-2, ex-UP 1083, ex-UP 2583, ex-Denver & Rio Grande Western GP40 3147, ex-DRGW 3159, ex-Conrail 3159, nee-Penn Central 3159.
