Remarks & Notes |
From atop Lookout Mountain one can see 7 states. Looking north here we can't see 7 states but we do have an excellent view of Chattanooga as one of the Incline cars comes to dock at Point Park. Built in 1895, Lookout Mountain Incline Railway operates on a 1-mile track that at its peak hits a 72.7% grade. It has 2 cars fastened to two pulleys and counterweights which allow them to safely travel up and down the mountain. A small passing track in the middle faciltates passes. It is considered a Historical Mechanical Engineering Landmark and sees over 20,000 visitors a year. For locals when it snows and ices, the incline provides a safe method to get up and down the mountain. The Incline is pretty hard to photograph as it is primarily surrounded by trees. The base station is hard to see at the bottom just in front of the large white building. |
