What used to be a rarity has become a chronic problem in 2019: Amtrak's Southwest Chief running extremely late due to a locomotive failure in Trinidad, Colorado. On August 15, 2019, Amtrak train 3 arrives in Fullerton, California, 6 hours 31 minutes late. Apparently one of the two Amtrak P42DCs, 158 and 16, had issues, as BNSF added SD70ACe 8418 to the point of the train. Unfortunately, freight engines cannot operate at the same speeds as passenger engines, and cause the train to fall further behind schedule as the long trip continues.
