An Amtrak special passes through Riverside, California, on July 17, 2017. This train, numbered 399, consisting of P42DCs 202 and 130, along with SC-44s IDTX 4617 and 4618, and a motley assortment of eight cars, Departed Chicago on July 15 headed for Los Angeles, and is following Amtrak 3, the 2½-hours-late westbound Southwest Chief, by six minutes. Reportedly, this train is testing the Siemens SC-44 "Chargers" on some long-distance routes, and will be heading north out of Los Angeles after this run. The two P42DCs up front were there because these crews were not yet qualified to operate the SC-44s.
