An eastbound exits Palisade Canyon just west of Carlin in early morning light. The Humbolt River is near flood stage from the runoff from a wet winter. The train is on the former Western Pacific, the former Southern Pacific is across the river. Originally they were two seperate lines, but during World War One the USRA required they be run as paired track with directional operation (basically double track), and this worked so well the two railroads continued to do so voluntarily after the war. Of course both are UP today, with occasional BNSF trackage rights trains.
