Remarks & Notes
MK5000C MPEX 9902 and SP 503 meet D&RGW 5354 in the Price River canyon. The original intention for the 5000 horse powered MK locomotives was for the three demo unit to go to Union Pacific. With the other three built for Southern Pacific. Both those railroads rejected them after trying them. The BCR also tried them out the demonstrators but also decided they were no interested. Finally Utah Railway always looking for a good deal took on the six of them. After a few years of trying to make them work. They were re-motored pulling out the 5000 horse power Cat engines. A EMD 645 was put in them with and SD50 car body. Becoming MK50-C's, this made them so they actually finally start to work out for the Utah Railway.
