Ringing in 2019 with steam, snow, and scenery. The San Juan mountains in southwestern Colorado saw 20+ inches at higher elevations in a winter storm lasting from December 31st - January 1st. With the heavy accumulations, the Durango and Silverton cancelled the January 1st train. But January 2nd dawned crystal clear so my brother and I decided to attempt a photo angle we'd only seen done in the summer. We couldn't get to exactly the spot we wanted with the deep snow on the cliffs, but it nevertheless it was a spectacular vantage point to watch the first train of 2019 steam along the narrow cliffs above the Animas River.
