Passing by the calm waters of the Clark Fork at a location we called “the cove,” a BNSF coal train heads westbound between Eddy and Thompson Falls, Montana, on the morning of September 18, 2012. Traversing Montana Rail Link’s scenic Fourth Subdivision, the Portland-bound train is powered by BNSF EMD SD70MAC No. 9987, Union Pacific GE AC44AC No. 6541 and BNSF EMD SD70MAC No. 9585 still in BN Grinstein colors.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
