Returning from Metropolitan Edison’s Portland Generating Station in Portland, Pennsylvania, Conrail train UPS drops down the grade at East Bangor with empty hoppers. This location is on the eastern end of the Slate Belt, a region with a large industry producing high-grade slate. The black hill in the background is a scrap pile from the Columbia Bangor Quarry, one of many quarries that operated in the Bangor-Pen Argyl area.
