A frosty morning in McEwen. The frost on the ties and the hefty steam plumes are tell-tale signs that it's one of those very chilly fall mornings in Oregon's Powder River Valley. A few minutes before dawn, Sumpter Valley Railway Mikado #19 eases away from the McEwen water tank with a mixed train of logs and freight, bound for Prairie City. On the adjacent siding, log-hog Heisler #3 from Eccles Lumber Company waits for the freight to pass, before taking her turn at the tank. She's literally headed for the nearby hills on a mission to bring back more timber for the hungry industries in the Pacific Northwest.
