One of the Prussian G8-1 class of 0-8-0s given to the French railways as war reparations after the end of World War I, SNCF 040.D.21 rests at Fives depot, Lille during an RCTS visit. Originally 4,984 of these engines were built for service in Germany whilst others were built for export. After the great war 1,489 were given away as war reparations mainly to France (738) and Belgium (576). Photo by the later Peter Gray. |
