Remarks & Notes
The Sprint train program was a piggyback program started by the Milwaukee Road and the FRA. Hot pig trains four each way between Chicago and the Twin Cities ran on a daily basis. These trains were so hot that only the Hiawatha's a decade earlier would have been hotter. In the photo above we're standing at the Grand Avenue Interlocking on the Ford train while Sprint train 210 rounds the bend heading to Chicago from St.Paul. The Lacrosse and River crews ran the entire 320 miles from St.Paul to Milwaukee where the C&M crew would take it to Chicago from the Milwaukee depot. This was the first time the old heads on Amtrak gave up their cushy passenger assignments to take one of these well paying once a week round trip assignments. I loved it cause it gave me a regular Engineers job on the Empire Builder for six months!
