As the bluffs of the Mississippi River swallow up the sun for the night, one of BNSF's "Smurf" EMD GP38-2s lead West Quincy based road switcher R HLA8351 09I west through Hannibal, MO's Kiwanis Park. The train is on its homeward trip dragging 28 cars of NS interchange traffic off the Springfield-Hannibal District back toward the rails of their Hannibal Subdivision at WF Swan Connection. BNSF received 12 of these blue and white painted, hence the smurf title, GMTX leasing GP38-2 locomotives in exchange for a handful of their end-cab switchers and GP15s.
