| The seldom documented east portal of the Harpers Ferry under Maryland Heights is not as glamorous as it's brother to the west. The brick face dates to 1894 and the only modification was only very recently taken in 2014 by a slight notch in the portal and tunnel walls to allow double stack containers.
The tunnel itself changed the railroad operations drastically whereas prior to it's completion and new alignment, the rails went around the rock face, barely leaving room for it, a road and the C&O Canal. Today Sandy Hook Road occupies the former right of way. |
