Remarks & Notes
A very picturesque tramway: The Riffelalp tram is the highest tramway in Europe. Length 675m, gauge 800mm, maximum speed 10 km/h, the power comes from a accumulator. This tram runs between the railwaystation Riffelalp from the Gornergratbahn to the Hotel Riffelalp (2222 meters a.s.l.). The line was built in 1898 and was then 469 meter long, electrified with 550 V 40 Hz DC. Operation stopped in 1960, after the Riffelalp Hotel burned down. Reopened in 2001 with accumulator vehicles # 2 and # 1, line lengthened with a turning loop near the hotel, which was built new. Cars # 2 and # 1 just left Riffelap station of the Gornergrat Bahn (GGB) with guests from overseas, running to the hotel.
