Remarks & Notes |
A little piece of history being made. South Tynedale railway inherited the branch line from Alston to Haltwhistle in the North of England after British Railways closed it down in 1976. The standard gauge track was immediately ripped up leaving the fledgling preservation group with a problem. The answer was to go narrow gauge with a 2 foot gauge track. Rebuilding began and over the years they have slowly tried to make their way from Alston to Haltwhistle to complete the full 17 miles of line. Saturday was a milestone for the volunteers as they opened their newest stretch of line, from Lintley to Slaggyford. Only 12 miles to go. Here society locomotive Barber hauls a train from Slaggyford with fare paying passengers for the first time in 42 years. |
