Remarks & Notes |
Norfolk Southern intermodal train 21Q (Harrisburg, PA to Chicago, IL) led by recently rebuilt SD70ACu #7305 heads West up the steep grade through 2,375 foot long Horseshoe Curve with a set of helpers on both the front and rear of the train. This engineering marvel was completed in 1854 by the Pennsylvania Railroad to lessen the grade to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains. The curve is such a vital piece of infrastructure that it was on a list of targets that German spies that had infiltrated the United States planned to sabotage before they were caught. Today it is considered a national historic site but is still part of one of the busiest rail lines on the East Coast. |
