Remarks & Notes
Norfolk & Western "M" class No. 433 - one of two 4-8-0 "M" class survivors sits on display at Abington, VA near the original ROW of the famed Abington branch of the N&W. The line saw its last steam locomotive in 1957 and was later abandoned in 1974. Per Ron Flanary: "The regular engines on the branch, in later years at least, were Class M "Mollies" 382 and 429. However, the Town of Abingdon wanted a steam locomotive for display, so the N&W donated just-retired sister class M 433 earlier that year. The 433 wasn't superheated, so it spent most of its time as a yard engine in Bristol (although it was known to have served as a helper engine on the branch as far as White Top, VA--top of the long grade--at least twice in the mid-'50s)." Ron's image can be seen here. Of note, the locomotive was built by Alco's Richmond Works - in January, of 1907.
