CNW leased and then acquired 30 Norfolk & Western Alco C-628s in 1973 due to a surge in traffic that left the railroad power short. They had not purchased a new locomotive since the SD45s, so these units helped out the railroad until new SD40-2s began arriving in late 1973/early 1974. The units then spent most of their career in Upper Michigan replacing aging FM units on ore trains. |
