Still bearing the New Haven logo on its nose, Penn Central E40 4974 rumbles out of the Park Avenue tunnel at 97th Street with a northbound passenger run. On April 8,1970, a few hints of spring hover this hazy afternoon, but New Yorkers are still bundled in winter coats against the chill lingering in the shadows. GE-built as EP-5 number 374 in 1954, the 4,000-hp “Jet” will remain on PC’s roster, hauling trains between New Haven and Grand Central Terminal for another year or two before giving way to GG-1s.
