As the Blue Cut fire continues to ravage Cajon Pass some 250 miles away, UP 7373 leads the detouring QWCRVB downgrade off the Gold Tree horseshoe curve and toward the Stenner Creek trestle in the morning mist as it nears San Luis Obispo for its next crew change. This train, along with a handful of others that were sent via the coast, almost made one feel like through-freights had actually returned to the coast line. The business of the line would cease within a matter of days, however, and return to the daily passage of Amtrak's Coast Starlights and the weekly run of the "Oil Cans."
