ETAT railway four-cylinder compound 4-6-2 No 231-712 waits to leave Paris Saint Lazare with an express for Dieppe in 1935.This was another of the ETAT-TP type Pacifics first built in 1914 and eventually totalling nearly 400 examples with 283 on the ETAT and the others spread over the AL, Est, PO and one on the Nord. This one was built by Schneider in 1920 and rebuilt with Willoteaux valve gear for the low pressure cylinders in the early 1930s. These rebuilds became SNCF class 231F. Photo by the late George R.
