Remarks & Notes |
A SLICE OF HISTORY. In 1976 the last train ran along the 18 mile line from Haltwhistle to Alston. Attempts were made to preserve it as a standard gauge railway but the line was quickly ripped up. Preservationists finally bought the track bed in the early 1980's and proceeded to rebuild the line back from Alston to Haltwhistle but as a 2 foot narrow gauge line. Yesterday they reached the five mile mark when the first train ran into Slaggyford station to convey guests back to Alston for a lunch and speeches. They confidently predict completing the remaining 13 mile section in 5 years. Here locomotive Harrogate is seen leaving newly restored Slaggyord station with the guests on board. Incidentally the signal box is a new build. |
