Remarks & Notes
Back on the High Line. DRGW 473, an Alco K-28 Locomotive built in 1923, is seen here hauling her Silverton Mixed Train southbound around the High Line Horseshoe Curve, some 400 ft above the Animas River Gorge. The 473 is one of just 3 survivors from a class of 10 such locomotives. Seven sisters were "recruited" for service on the White Pass & Yukon during WWII, and unfortunately, the hard service and austere conditions took their toll. All 7 of those locomotives were deemed scrap when they returned from their Alaskan service. The 3 survivors are all owned by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad today. The 473 is actively in service, while sisters 476 and 478 are undergoing long-term restorations for future operation.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
