Remarks & Notes
Historic R Line. Norfolk Southern continues to operate the Southern's R line, which was built in 1852 by the Charlotte & S.C. Railroad. As NS's main line to Charlotte from Columbia and Charleston, the R line sees quite a bit of traffic. Historically, this line was included in the route taken by General Longstreet's troops from Virginia to Tennessee before the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863 and later was significantly damaged by General Sherman's troops in 1865. Here, in what is for Columbia rare and foreign power, a KCS Belle leads a grain train to Monetta, SC, which is the home of the Big Mo--a still operating drive in movie theater.
