Big Wheels Keep On Rollin' (Thanks to a Lot of Grease!)
On April 12, 2014, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 has arrived in San Bernardino, California, for the city's annual Railroad Days celebration. (Ironically, the engine is owned by the city of San Bernardino, but makes its home in L.A.) While the 1927-built Baldwin may be on display, its nearly 60-mile trip from its home in Los Angeles means the engine is due for some maintenance. One of the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society's volunteer crew members lugs the alemite gun to the steamer's right side to lubricate the massive side rod bearings. The engine and its train will turn overnight, in preparation for a departure back to L.A. on Sunday, the 13th.
