In February 1986, the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend acquired 12 former Burlington Northern F45s for coal service on the CSS. Of the 12 units, only 2 would turn a revenue mile for the CSS, and the plan to use F45s would be shut down due to mechanical reliability issues with the motors. All 12 units would be sold for scrap later in the year. Tom Golden photo.
Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
