Remarks & Notes
"NYAR PTC Braking Test Train at Huntington " On Saturday, February 4th, New York & Atlantic Railway and Long Island Rail Road ran a test train on the Port Jefferson Branch to determine the proper braking distances that would allow freight/work trains operating on the grades around Huntington to safely comply with Positive Train Control. The test train made 3 westbound trips down grade between Huntington Station and AMOTT Interlocking, reaching top speeds between 35-40mph then slowly applying the brakes just before Rogues Road Crossing east of Cold Spring Harbor Station. Once at a complete stop, the stopping point was recorded by NYAR and LIRR officials. After each westbound run, the train would deadhead back to Huntington Station to restart the test. Locomotives placed on each end were used to allow the train to run in either direction while remaining in the test limits, assist the east end locomotives in getting the train back up-grade to Huntington and to assist the train in getting to the top test speed before reaching the first braking mark. Here we see the east end of the test train pulling into Huntington Station to pick up LIRR personnel and begin the test.
