Railroading out here isn't easy. January 2017 brought much needed snow to the Sierra Nevada Mountains along with a variety of challenges for the Union Pacific Snow Fighters. In the days before this shot was taken, the Donner Pass Route had been hammered by a couple fierce winter storms. Interstate 80 was closed for over 24 hours and the railroad was brought to a standstill. To make matters worse, a large scale power outage in the Truckee-Tahoe region put the switch warmers out-of-service. The dedicated men of the Union Pacific Snow Fighting Team used a whole lot of grit to get the railroad back up and running. A foot of fresh snow fell overnight, blanketing the nose of UP 589. The day was just beginning though, as more snow would continue to fall.
