Conrail's Browns Yard Santa Train is seen passing the historic Camden & Amboy marker in Spotswood. The Camden & Amboy Railroad was the first to operate in the state of New Jersey, reaching Spotswood in 1831. It's mainline diagonally crossed the state, indirectly connecting the cities of New York and Philadelphia. The C&A was eventually acquired by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which would construct its iconic four-track Philadelphia to New York Main Line parallel that of the original C&A. Portions of the original Camden & Amboy remained in service, and this particular segment is still in service today, operating as Conrail's Amboy Secondary...185 years later. In recognition of the line's historic significance, the town of Spotswood erected an historic marker and a segment of track anchored to a set of original stone sleepers.
