Remarks & Notes |
A scene epitomising the changes in the UK energy industry of recent years; DB Cargo 66176 hauls a long train of imported wood pellets from the port of Immingham bound for Drax power station. Drax, the largest power station in the UK now co-fires coal and biomass with plans for 50% of it's boilers to fire pure biomass by 2017. The source of the biomass pellets is from the USA and Canada. In the background of the image can be seen the buildings of Hatfield Colliery where production ceased in 2015 due to a slump in demand for coal products. The last deep coal mine in the UK, Kellingley, closed during 2016. |
