| Back when power shortages in Seattle seemed to be a regular occurrence for Amtrak, it wasn't all that uncommon to spot a UP or BNSF unit on the point of the southbound Coast Starlight. While Amtrak could scrap together a spare unit out of the Oakland yard to replace the freight motor during the train's station stop in Oakland, this was both rare and time consuming - often adding an hour delay to the train's time. On this hot afternoon in Santa Margarita, the more common result shows as UP 4408 leads Amtrak 11 into the small community of Santa Margarita on its approach to Cuesta Pass. |
