On November 10, 1905, the Erie Railroad dedicated this granite monument to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the railroad’s groundbreaking at this spot in Deposit, New York. For some reason I didn’t photograph the other side of the monument, which is inscribed,
“Here, on the morning of November 7, 1935, ground was broken for the construction of the Erie Railroad, designed to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes. Its completion to Lake Erie was publicly celebrated in New York and along the route to Dunkirk. May 14, 15, 16, 1851.”
I haven’t been able to find any present-day accounts of the monument. I would be interested to know if it still exists.
