Remarks & Notes
One of Kentucky's coolest short line operations is the Transkentucky Transportation Railroad out of Paris, Kentucky. The railroad mainly hauled coal to Maysville to be loaded onto barges on the Ohio River. With the downturn in coal it was only a matter of time before this railroad would take a major blow and with the closing of the Maysville Terminal the only traffic left is the transloading facility in the yard at Paris. I am glad that I was able to go down last year a couple of times to document operations to Maysville in better times. Earlier this year I took a trip down to the greater Cincinnati area to visit a friend and take some pictures. I knew that one of the CSX locals had dropped off a string of coal hoppers in the yard over the weekend. So It was a good possibility the TTI could run on that Monday. Gage O'Dell was already in Paris and keeping me informed on what was happening. I got a message that four of the units got fired up and was moving about the yard. With the CSX LCL Sub being dead I began to head for Paris to hopefully get there before they left. Unfortunately they didn't hook up to the coal hoppers and they just went about switching the yard. While Gage and I were talking an employee from TTI came out and asked if we were waiting on the train and we told him yes. He informed us that they wouldn't be running until later in the week. Just as he was about to drive away I asked if we could maybe come back into the shop and yard to take a few photos. He said he had to run to the store to grab some pop and snacks and on his way back in we could follow him into the yard. So a day that looked to be a total loss turned into a success. Gage and I spent a couple hours talking with the employee and walking around the yard and snapping many photos. At one point the employee left to do some work just outside of town and we were left alone in the shop. We ended up leaving before he came back. Here TTI 5815 is in for some work and TTI 5758 is being used for spare parts. Hopefully the coal market will bounce back and this operation can thrive once again. Until then the few trips I took will be the only memories I have of chasing this neat shortline across the Bluegrass State. Photo taken with permission.

Do you ever wonder what is inside a locomotive, and how they run. Check out these photos from the shops to see locomotives taken apart to be repaired or rebuilt. It is cool to be able to see the hearts and organs of these steel horses.
